SWLUG Carmarthen Meetings

This page serves as a temporary place for information about the new monthly Carmarthen meetings of the South Wales Linux Users Group (SWLUG). If the Carmarthen meetings turn out to be a success, in due course this information is likely to be assimilated into the main SWLUG web site.

Yr Hen Dderwen
King Street
Carmarthen

Yr Hen Dderwen (The Old Oaktree) is a Wetherspoons pub. It serves food and drink all night, has a fairly sizeable non-smoking area at the rear which is usually not too noisy, and most of the staff are bilingual (Welsh and English).

Thursday night is curry night at Yr Hen Dderwen. They offer a special meal deal of curry (usually lamb, chicken or vegetable at varying degrees of "hotness") and a pint of beer (or a glass of wine if you prefer) for around £4. The curry menu also has the usual extras such as samosas, poppadums, nan bread and bhajis.

From Swansea or Cardiff
  • At the end of the M4 westbound (at the Pont Abraham roundabout), take the A48 towards Carmarthen.
  • At the Crosshands roundabout, continue over on the A48 towards Carmarthen.
  • At the next roundabout, the first one when you reach Carmarthen (you'll know it's the right one, because it comes just after a big CAERFYRDDIN/CARMARTHEN sign), take the third exit (effectively right), signposted to Llandeilo A40.
  • At the next roundabout, take the first exit (left) towards the town centre; you'll go past Curry's and PC World on your right.
  • At the next roundabout, take the second exit (essentially a right turn) towards the town centre. You'll pass the train station on your left and go over a bridge over the Towy river. Keep in the right-hand lane.
  • After crossing the bridge, go straight ahead at the traffic lights; the road veers to the right and climbs steeply uphill past the council offices built within the old castle walls on the left.
  • The road bends sharply to the right at the top of the hill; keep going until you reach the next mini roundabout by St. Peter's church, taking the first exit. This will take you on to King Street, where you'll quickly come to a big car park opposite the church.

The St. Peter's car park at the top of King Street (next to the library) is free in the evening, and is conveniently located within easy walking distance of the pub (the pub is on the right hand side of the street as you walk from the car park).
